FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are hose rings and how are they made?

Hose rings are essential sealing elements that are usually made from an extruded hose. Their characteristic feature is a round, circular cross-section, created by cutting hose pieces or hose by the metre to length. These rings are mainly used for sealing and fixing in various industrial applications and also act as buffers in statically and dynamically loaded components.

Manufacturing methods

1. Extrusion in the extruder / vulcanisation in the autoclave: The most widely used method for producing hose rings is extrusion. The unvulcanised rubber compound is fed into the extruder in strips and conveyed forwards through the die by a screw, producing a circular hose with the required diameters and consistent tolerances without significant eccentricity. This hose is then fully vulcanised in a large steam autoclave. In the final step, the finished hose is cut to the required length to produce the desired hose rings.

1.1 As a moulded hose with tighter tolerances: Here, hose pieces are moulded on the principle of a moulded article, allowing tighter tolerances than extrusion; subsequent grinding of the outer diameter is no longer necessary.

2. Cutting and further processing: After extrusion and subsequent vulcanisation in the steam autoclave, or after moulded hose production, the rubber hoses can be cut and processed in various ways.

Hose rings: The extruded or moulded hoses are cut to the required cut thicknesses on various cutting machines, partly with circular knives and partly with fixed knives.

Ground hose rings: The extruded hoses are pulled onto a mandrel and the outer diameter is ground over its full surface to a tighter tolerance. This allows a more precise fit, e.g. in cable glands, to ensure optimum strain relief for the cable passed through.

Cut-in rings: Once the extruded or moulded hose has been cut into the required hose sections by circular knife or chop cut, we can provide these rings with additional diameters. These can then easily be removed by hand or with a knife. The advantage is that only one ring with a specific inner and outer diameter has to be produced, which is then given further diameters in a more cost-effective process. This allows a single ring to be used in several ways. Also known as a universal sealing ring or, as it used to be called, an onion ring.

Colour code stripe: We can also mark the finished hose rings, sealing rings, moulded sealing rings and cut-in rings with a colour code stripe on the outer diameter. This allows, for example, quick and reliable identification of the different materials, as a particular size is often needed in different grades.

3. Material selection and design: Hose rings are made from a wide range of elastomers, each offering specific properties such as abrasion resistance, ageing resistance, chemical resistance and different temperature ranges. Commonly used materials include NR, NBR, CR, EPDM, FPM/FKM (Viton®) and silicone. The choice of the right material depends on the requirements of the application.

Precise manufacturing of hose rings, whether by extrusion or moulding, ensures that they meet the specific requirements of different industries. The versatility and flexibility of these sealing elements make them an essential component in areas such as the electrical industry, connection technology, mechanical and plant engineering, the sanitary industry and the automotive sector.

At SIEGEL Dichtungen we not only offer standard hose rings and moulded rings, but are also on hand with tailor-made solutions for your end product and technical advice. Please contact us for further information on our products and services.
