Application
Seals for drinking water: approvals at a glance
| Approval | Country | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| KTW-BWGL (UBA) | Germany | Hygienic assessment of materials in contact with drinking water: migration, odour and taste |
| EN 16421 (formerly DVGW W 270) | Europe | Growth of microorganisms on materials |
| EU DWD | Europe | EU Drinking Water Directive 2020/2184, uniform requirements for materials, expected from January 2027 |
| DVGW | Germany | Testing and certification in the gas and water sector, approvals mainly for gas-carrying pipes |
| ELL (Elastomer Guideline) | Germany | former guideline for elastomers, now KTW-BWGL Annex D |
| WRAS | United Kingdom | Water Regulations Approval Scheme, tested to BS 6920 |
| ACS | France | Attestation de Conformité Sanitaire for materials in contact with drinking water |
| KIWA | Netherlands | Certification of products for the drinking water supply, product-specific on request |
| NSF/ANSI 61 | USA | Drinking water system components |
In most cases we can supply in conformity with WRAS, ACS and NSF/ANSI 61. KIWA is product-specific and somewhat more involved; we are happy to check it for your application.

High safety & hygiene standards
In drinking water applications, high safety and quality standards are essential to ensure that all components meet strict legal requirements, standards and regulations while safeguarding the purity and safety of the drinking water. At SIEGEL Dichtungen, we know the specific requirements of this sensitive field and offer you specially designed materials and sealing solutions characterised by their reliability and durability.
Our product range includes sealing rings, hose rings and O-rings used in pipelines and connections to prevent leaks and keep the lines tight and clean. We also offer products that are flexible and resistant to the conditions in drinking water systems. Our punched parts and moulded parts are also manufactured to these high standards to ensure that they comply with the requirements of the German Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV).
We use materials such as EPDM, which are particularly well suited to drinking water applications thanks to their resistance to water, ozone and temperature fluctuations. These materials guarantee safe, lasting sealing that works reliably even under changing operating conditions.
In this field, we supply to various standards and approvals, including KTW-BWGL, W270, EN16421, WRAS, KIWA, DVGW and, on request, to the regulations applicable in the respective countries. For semi-finished products and compounds, we work with renowned manufacturers such as Holcim (Cooper), Semperit, Kraiburg, Phoenix and others.
Materials for drinking water seals
- EPDM: the standard in drinking water, highly resistant to water, hot water, ozone and temperature fluctuations
- EPDM blue: our compound in the typical drinking water blue, developed according to the UBA positive list
- Silicone: assessed not under the KTW-BWGL but still under the KTW guideline for silicone
Manufacturing processes for drinking water seals
- Punching and water jet cutting: flat seals and sealing rings from KTW-BWGL listed sheet material
- Extrusion: hose rings, hose sections and profiles from compounds with KTW-BWGL certificate or conformity
- Injection moulding, compression moulding and transfer moulding: moulded parts, O-rings and moulded sealing rings from EPDM compounds with KTW-BWGL certificate
