Overview

SBR in use

SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) is the most cost-effective and probably the most widely used option among elastomers. The material is characterised by good mechanical properties and very good abrasion and wear resistance. In its pure form, SBR is rather inflexible, which is why it is often blended with NR.

Thanks to its robust, abrasion-resistant structure, SBR is often used where vibrations and impacts have to be absorbed, or as impact protection in various industrial sectors. Its chemical resistance is limited to non-existent compared with other elastomers.

Properties

Properties of SBR

  • Very good abrasion resistance
  • Very good wear resistance
  • Very good mechanical properties
  • Good extensibility
  • Good flexibility at low temperatures
  • Ideal for dynamic applications
  • Not recommended for contact with chemical substances
  • Not recommended for direct UV or ozone exposure
  • Temperature resistant, as a rule, from -40 °C to +80 °C

1 = very good 2 = good 3 = limited 4 = poor 5 = very poor
Medium Rating Description
Mineral oils and greases 5 Very poor resistance
Fuels 5 Very poor resistance
Organic acids and bases 2 Good resistance
Acids and alkalis, dilute 4 Poor resistance
Brake fluid 3 Limited resistance
