IP protection ratings

Sealing against dust and water

Flat seals for enclosures and electrical assemblies help achieve the required IP rating. The appropriate classification always depends on the geometry, the component and the installed condition.

1st digit

Dust & contact

2nd digit

Water & moisture

Examples

IP 54 · IP 67

Overview of the classifications

The IP rating consists of two digits. The first describes the protection against solid foreign bodies and contact, the second the protection against moisture and water.

IP 20

Dust 2/6
Water 0/9

Finger protection, no water protection

Protected against solid objects from 12.5 mm, no protection against water.

Typical: dry indoor areas, control cabinets

IP 44

Dust 4/6
Water 4/9

Splash-proof

Protected against solid objects from 1 mm and splashing water from all directions.

Typical: luminaires, sockets, damp rooms

IP 65

Dust 6/6
Water 5/9

Dust-tight and jet-proof

No ingress of dust, protected against water jets from all directions.

Typical: outdoor enclosures, machinery

IP 67

Dust 6/6
Water 7/9

Temporary immersion

Dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion, up to 1 m depth.

Typical: sensors, connectors, terminal boxes

IP 68

Dust 6/6
Water 8/9

Continuous immersion

Dust-tight and protected against continuous immersion, conditions as specified by the manufacturer.

Typical: underwater lights, pumps, cable glands

1st digit

Protection against dust and contact

1 Protection against foreign bodies > 50 mm
2 Protection against foreign bodies > 12 mm
3 Protection against foreign bodies > 2.5 mm
4 Protection against foreign bodies > 1.0 mm
5 Protection against the ingress of dust
6 Complete sealing against dust

2nd digit

Protection against moisture and water

1 Protection against dripping water
2 Protection against dripping water when tilted up to 15°
3 Protection against spraying water
4 Protection against splashing water
5 Protection against water jets
6 Protection against heavy seas
7 Protection against temporary immersion
8 Protection against continuous submersion
9 Protection against high-pressure water

The respective classification always depends on the geometry and the component or its installed condition. Our seals play a supporting role in sealing enclosures, switches and electrical assemblies.

Application

Examples of how to specify the protection rating

Rubber seal installed in an enclosure to achieve a specific IP rating
Enclosure seal in the installed condition: the protection rating achieved depends on geometry, material and installation.

You need your component to be sealed against dust and possible splashing water?

= IP 54

You need your component to be completely sealed against dust and temporary immersion in water?

= IP 67
