Overview

EPDM in use

EPDM is an elastomer with very good resistance to UV, ozone and weathering for a wide range of outdoor applications. Typical areas of use are outdoor structures, machinery and plant, the automotive sector and means of transport.

Where other materials become brittle, crack or lose their tightness under UV and weathering, EPDM retains its function. The material also remains flexible at low temperatures, can be used in water and can be supplied in an electrically insulating version on request.

Properties

Properties of EPDM

  • Ideal for outdoor use: very good resistance to UV, ozone and weathering
  • Good ageing resistance
  • Conformities and approvals for drinking water to KTW-BWGL, EN 16421 (W270)
  • Conformities and approvals for food to FDA, BfR and EC 1935/2004
  • Can be used in water (seawater)
  • Electrically insulating or conductive (EMC), with specific volume resistivity on request
  • Sulphur-cured (standard): temperature resistant up to approx. +100 °C
  • Peroxide-cured: temperature resistant up to approx. +150 °C

Chemical resistance

Resistance of EPDM

1 = very good 2 = good 3 = limited 4 = poor 5 = very poor
Medium Rating Description
Brake fluid 2 Good resistance
Oils & greases 5 Very poor resistance
Fuels 5 Very poor resistance
Acids, dilute 2 Good resistance
Alkalis, dilute 3 Limited resistance
