Glossary of elastomer processing
Eccentric press
An eccentric press is a mechanical press that transmits linear force to a tool through the rotating movement of an eccentric (also called a crank). This tool processes workpieces by punching, cutting, forming or embossing. Eccentric presses are essential machines in elastomer and plastics processing and are used in the manufacture of all kinds of punched parts.
The eccentric press uses the mechanical energy generated by the rotation of a motor and converts it into a linear movement. This is done by connecting a rotating eccentric to a press piston, which transmits the force to the workpiece.
Main components of the eccentric press
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Eccentric | Converts the rotating movement of the motor into a linear movement. |
| Press piston | Transmits the force to the tool that processes the workpiece. |
| Ram | Performs the linear movement and carries the upper tool. |
| Frame | Supports the entire structure and provides stability during operation. |
| Tool holder | Holds the tool that performs the specific processing task. |
| Drive | Motor that supplies the energy for operation. |
Eccentric presses are available in various designs, depending on the application:
| Type | Description | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical eccentric press | Uses mechanical energy generated by the eccentric to produce the linear movement. | Punching, cutting, embossing |
| Hydraulic eccentric press | Combines mechanical and hydraulic energy to achieve higher precision and force. | Deep drawing, forming |
| Servo eccentric press | Has a servo drive for more precise control and flexible applications. | Fine blanking, complex precision work |
-
High speed: eccentric presses work fast and are suitable for mass production.
-
Precision: they ensure consistently high accuracy when processing workpieces.
-
Versatility: eccentric presses can be used for a wide range of applications such as punching, embossing or cutting.
-
Durability: the robust design ensures a long service life, even under heavy loads.
Eccentric presses are used in many industries, especially where precision and efficiency are required.
Automotive industry
In the automotive sector, eccentric presses are used to manufacture body parts, seals and other metal components.
Electronics industry
In the electronics industry, they are used to produce small metal parts such as contacts, housings or fasteners.
Rubber industry
In the rubber industry, eccentric presses are used to produce all kinds of punched parts and blanks.
-
Energy requirements: eccentric presses require a certain amount of energy, especially when processing hard materials.
-
Maintenance effort: the machines require regular maintenance to ensure high precision and reliability.
-
Safety requirements: because of the high forces and speeds, strict safety precautions must be taken.
The following table shows the main differences between an eccentric press and a hydraulic press:
| Feature | Eccentric press | Hydraulic press |
|---|---|---|
| Working speed | Faster | Slower |
| Precision | High precision for standardised tasks | Very precise, especially for complex work |
| Flexibility | Limited | Very high |
| Application of force | Mechanical | Hydraulic |
| Maintenance effort | Lower | Higher |
-
Which materials can be processed with an eccentric press? All elastomers, foamed materials, composites, high-pressure gasket materials and some plastics can be processed with an eccentric press.
-
Which safety precautions are necessary when working with an eccentric press? Guards, emergency stop switches and regular operator training are essential.
-
How long does an eccentric press last? With proper maintenance and care, eccentric presses can be operated for decades.
-
Can an eccentric press be used for individual projects? Yes, with the appropriate tools, eccentric presses can be used for customer-specific applications.
The eccentric press is a versatile and powerful machine that is indispensable in industrial production. With its ability to work precisely and quickly, it is ideally suited to the mass production of elastomer and plastic parts. Despite the challenges of maintenance and energy consumption, the eccentric press remains a key tool in numerous industries.
