Glossary of elastomer processing
Fell (rubber sheet)
In a technical and industrial context, the German term Fell refers to a thin, flexible layer or coating that performs a specific protective, sealing or functional task. The term is often used in sealing technology, materials processing and coatings. In this sense, Fell has nothing to do with its everyday meaning of animal fur or hide and is used mainly for elastic or textile applications.
Fells come in various forms and materials, depending on the application and requirements. They are generally used for sealing, for protection against wear or for reinforcing components.
Typical applications of fells
| Area | Application | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Sealing technology | Elastic layers for sealing | Protection against leaks and wear |
| Materials processing | Fell-like coatings on surfaces | Improved feel and durability |
| Textile industry | Technical textiles with fell-like structures | Thermal insulation, flexibility |
| Automotive engineering | Protective layers in interiors or mechanical components | Durability, protection against abrasion |
Fells can be made from different materials, depending on the specific requirements. The following table gives an overview of the common types:
| Type | Material | Properties | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elastic fells | Rubber, silicone | Flexible, durable, waterproof | Seals, protective layers |
| Textile fells | Technical textiles | Thermally insulating, breathable | Clothing, insulation |
| Plastic fells | Polyurethane, PVC | Robust, chemical-resistant | Protective covers, coatings |
-
Protection against wear: fells protect components against abrasion and external influences.
-
Flexibility: elastic fells adapt to irregular shapes.
-
Durability: fells increase the service life of the protected components.
-
Multifunctionality: in addition to protection, many fells offer additional functions such as insulation or sealing.
-
Material selection: not every material is suitable for every application.
-
Costs: high-quality materials can be expensive.
-
Maintenance: some fells require regular care to maintain their function.
Fells and coatings perform similar tasks but differ in their structure and application:
| Feature | Fells | Coatings |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Flexible, often multi-layered | Solid, thin |
| Material | Elastic, textile-based | Plastic, metal |
| Task | Protection, sealing, reinforcement | Surface protection |
| Typical applications | Seals, protective layers | Corrosion protection, appearance |

What are technical fells? Technical fells are flexible, protective layers used in industrial applications, e.g. for sealing or coating.
-
Which materials are fells made from? Fells can be made from rubber, silicone, textiles or plastics such as polyurethane.
-
What advantages do fells offer over other protective systems? Fells are flexible, durable and often multifunctional, as they can provide protection, sealing and insulation at the same time.
-
Are there special care requirements for fells? Depending on the material, fells must be cleaned or maintained regularly to ensure their protective function.
Fells are flexible, multifunctional layers that are indispensable in numerous technical and industrial applications. They provide protection, sealing and insulation and contribute to the durability and efficiency of components. Whether in sealing technology, automotive engineering or textile processing, fells are an effective solution to many challenges.
