IMDS

The IMDS (International Material Data System) is a global online system for recording, managing and sharing material data in the automotive industry. It was developed by leading vehicle manufacturers to ensure compliance with legal requirements for documenting ingredients and with environmental regulations such as the EU End-of-Life Vehicles Directive (ELV). Information on materials, substances and components is provided along the entire supply chain via IMDS.

IMDS offers a comprehensive solution for recording and managing material data, with the following characteristics:

  • Global platform: supports collaboration between vehicle manufacturers and suppliers worldwide.

  • Legal compliance: ensures compliance with environmental regulations such as REACH and RoHS.

  • Material transparency: enables complete traceability of material contents.

  • Standardisation: standardises material reporting in the automotive industry.

  • Data validation: integrated checking mechanisms to ensure correct information.

IMDS offers a wide range of functions that support the recording and analysis of material data:

  • Material declaration: suppliers can provide detailed information on material compositions and substances.

  • Substance management: monitoring of prohibited or restricted substances.

  • Data sharing: exchange of material data along the supply chain.

  • Reporting: creation of reports on compliance with environmental regulations.

IMDS is used in various areas of the automotive industry:

Development of new vehicles

  • Material selection: support in selecting environmentally friendly and legally compliant materials.

  • Environmental compatibility: analysis of the environmental impact of components and materials.

Supply chain management

  • Collaboration: exchange of material data between manufacturers and suppliers.

  • Transparency: traceability of material contents along the supply chain.

  • Documentation: ensuring compliance with regulations such as REACH, RoHS and the EU End-of-Life Vehicles Directive.

  • Reporting: proof of material compliance to authorities and partners.

Using IMDS offers vehicle manufacturers and suppliers numerous advantages:

  • Legal certainty: compliance with legal requirements and environmental regulations.

  • Efficiency: simplified material reporting through standardisation.

  • Transparency: clear overview of material contents and substances.

  • Sustainability: promoting the use of environmentally friendly materials.

Despite the advantages, there are also challenges when using IMDS:

  • Complexity: recording and maintaining extensive material data requires expertise.

  • Data protection: ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive material data.

  • Effort: time-consuming processes for entering and validating data.

  • What is the purpose of IMDS? IMDS is used to record and manage material data in order to comply with environmental regulations and ensure material transparency.

  • Who uses IMDS? Vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers use IMDS to exchange material information along the supply chain.

  • Is IMDS mandatory? For many vehicle manufacturers, using IMDS is mandatory in order to meet legal requirements.

  • How can I access IMDS? IMDS is accessible via an online platform. Users need to register and have the appropriate access rights.

IMDS is an indispensable tool for the automotive industry to ensure material transparency, comply with environmental regulations and promote sustainable materials. Through standardisation and global use, IMDS offers manufacturers and suppliers an efficient solution for meeting complex material data requirements.
