Glossary of elastomer processing

Heat-resistant seals

Heat-resistant seals are special sealing elements designed to retain their function even at extreme temperatures. They are made from materials that can withstand high thermal loads without losing their mechanical properties. Heat-resistant seals are indispensable in industry, particularly in the automotive, chemical, energy and food industries, in machine and turbine construction, in engine manufacturing and in high-temperature plants.

Heat-resistant seals are characterised by the following properties:

  • Temperature resistance: can be used at temperatures from -50 °C to over 1000 °C, depending on the material.

  • Compressive strength: suitable for use in high-pressure systems.

  • Chemical resistance: resistance to aggressive media such as acids, alkalis or oils.

  • Durability: retention of elasticity and sealing effect even under cyclic thermal loads.

Choosing the right material is crucial for the performance of a heat-resistant seal. The most important materials are:

MaterialTemperature rangePropertiesTypical applications
Silicone (VMQ)-50 °C to +230 °CFlexible, chemical-resistantAutomotive industry, food processing
Fluororubber (FKM, Viton®)-20 °C to +250 °CHigh chemical and heat resistanceChemical industry, engine manufacturing

MetalUp to +1200 °CHigh-pressure and heat-resistantFlange seals, turbines
PTFE (Teflon®)-200 °C to +260 °CChemical-resistant, low-frictionPharmaceutical industry, chemical processes

Heat-resistant seals are used in numerous industries where high temperatures and aggressive media occur:

Automotive industry

  • Cylinder head gaskets: withstand the high temperatures in combustion engines.

  • Exhaust gaskets: resistant to thermal and chemical loads.

Chemical industry

  • Flange seals: prevent leaks in piping systems at high temperatures.

  • Reactor seals: resistant to chemical and thermal influences.

Energy and power plant industry

  • Steam lines: seals that withstand extreme pressure and temperature conditions.

  • Turbines: heat-resistant seals for sealing high-temperature areas.

Food and pharmaceutical industries

  • Sterilisation plants: resistant to high temperatures and steam.

  • Seals for plants: food-safe and heat-resistant, e.g. in baking ovens or cooking systems.

Heat-resistant seals offer numerous advantages:

  • Reliability: retain their function even under extreme conditions.

  • Versatility: available for different temperatures, media and pressure requirements.

  • Durability: reduce downtime and maintenance costs.

  • Safe operation: prevent leaks and ensure the protection of plants and the environment.

  • Material selection: choosing the right material requires precise knowledge of the operating conditions.

  • Costs: high-performance materials such as graphite or metal are expensive.

  • Installation: improper installation can considerably shorten the service life of the seals.

  • Which materials are suitable for extreme temperatures above 1000 °C? Graphite and metal seals are ideal for applications with temperatures above 1000 °C.

  • Are heat-resistant seals food-safe? Yes, materials such as silicone or PTFE are both heat-resistant and food-safe.

  • How do I choose the right seal for my application? Consider the temperature range, the chemical requirements and the pressure to select the right material.

  • How long do heat-resistant seals last? Their service life depends on the operating conditions but can be extended considerably by correct installation and maintenance.

Heat-resistant seals are essential for safe and efficient operation in high-temperature environments. They offer solutions for various industries and guarantee reliability, safety and durability. Whether in the automotive industry, chemicals or energy technology, choosing the right seal ensures optimum performance and cost efficiency.
