Glossary of elastomer processing
X-ring
An X-ring, also known as a quad ring, is a special type of seal with a cross-shaped cross-section. Unlike the conventional O-ring, the X-ring has four sealing lips, which allows better sealing, less wear and higher pressure resistance. X-rings are used mainly in hydraulics, pneumatics and other industrial applications where reliable sealing is crucial.
Compared with conventional O-rings, X-rings offer several advantages:
-
Improved sealing effect: four sealing lips ensure reliable sealing in static and dynamic applications.
-
Lower frictional resistance: the cross-shaped cross-section minimises the contact surface and reduces friction.
-
Higher pressure resistance: better pressure distribution prevents media from penetrating.
-
Less wear: the symmetrical seal shape ensures even loading and a longer service life.
-
Wide range of applications: available in different materials for a wide variety of media and temperatures.
X-rings are made from various elastomers, chosen according to the application:
| Material | Properties | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| NBR (nitrile rubber) | Resistant to oil and fuel, temperature-resistant up to +120 °C | Hydraulics, pneumatics |
| FKM (fluororubber, Viton®) | Resistant to chemicals, temperatures up to +250 °C | Chemical industry, high-temperature applications |
| EPDM (ethylene propylene diene rubber) | Resistant to weathering, ozone and hot water | Outdoor applications, drinking water pipes |
| Silicone (VMQ) | Excellent elasticity at temperatures from -50 °C to +200 °C | Food and medical technology |
| HNBR (hydrogenated NBR) | Increased resistance to heat, oil and abrasion | Automotive industry, high-pressure systems |
X-rings are used in numerous industries, as they offer a versatile and durable solution for sealing requirements:
Hydraulics
-
Hydraulic cylinders: reliable sealing against high pressures and oils.
-
Valves: precise sealing effect in complex hydraulic systems.
Pneumatics
-
Compressors: efficient sealing with low frictional resistance.
-
Control systems: reduction of leaks in pneumatic controls.
Automotive industry
-
Engines: seals for oil and fuel lines.
-
Braking systems: reliable sealing in pressure systems.
Chemical industry
-
Pumps: seals against aggressive chemicals.
-
Reactors: high-temperature-resistant seals.
Food and pharmaceutical industry
-
Process engineering: food-safe seals in plants.
-
Medical devices: sterile, elastic seals.
X-rings offer several advantages that make them a preferred choice in many industrial applications:
-
Universal use: suitable for static and dynamic sealing.
-
Longer service life: less wear thanks to optimised geometry.
-
Lower risk of leakage: the four sealing lips improve sealing performance.
-
Easy installation: interchangeable with standard O-rings in many applications.
Despite their advantages, there are also challenges:
-
Costs: X-rings can be more expensive than standard O-rings.
-
Precise dimensioning: exact dimensions and tolerances are crucial for the sealing effect.
-
Choice of material: choosing the right material requires precise knowledge of the operating conditions.
-
What is the difference between an X-ring and an O-ring? The X-ring has a cross-shaped cross-section with four sealing lips, whereas the O-ring has a round cross-section. The X-ring offers better sealing properties and less wear.
-
Can X-rings replace O-rings? Yes, X-rings can replace O-rings in many applications, particularly in dynamic seals.
-
Which media are X-rings suitable for? Depending on the material, X-rings are resistant to oil, chemicals, water, steam and other media.
-
How are X-rings installed? X-rings can be installed in standardised grooves, but require careful dimensioning and lubrication.
X-rings offer an efficient and durable solution to sealing problems in various industries. Their special geometry ensures improved sealing, less wear and versatile applications. With the right choice of material and correct use, X-rings are an ideal choice for demanding sealing requirements.
