Quad ring

A quad ring, also known as a four-lip seal, is a sealing element with a characteristic square cross-section. It is used mainly in static and dynamic applications to seal liquids or gases. Compared with conventional O-rings, quad rings offer improved sealing properties, particularly in demanding technical applications.

Quad rings are characterised by the following properties:

  • Efficient sealing: the four lips of the cross-section provide a better contact surface and a higher sealing effect.

  • Reduced friction: lower friction than O-rings, which extends service life.

  • Wide range of applications: suitable for applications with high pressure, vacuum or dynamic loads.

  • Low deformation: minimal risk of “rolling” or twisting under load.

In many cases, quad rings offer advantages over conventional O-rings:

Quad rings are made from a wide range of materials, chosen according to the application:

MaterialPropertiesTypical applications
NBR (nitrile rubber)Resistant to oils and greases, cost-effectiveHydraulic systems, fuel lines
FKM (Viton®)Heat-resistant, chemically resistantAutomotive industry, chemical plants
EPDMWeather-resistant, resistant to water and steamOutdoor applications, hot water pipes
SiliconeFlexible, food-safe, temperature-resistantMedical technology, food industry

Quad rings are found in a wide variety of industries and applications:

Hydraulic and pneumatic systems

  • Advantage: improved sealing effect and lower leakage rates at high pressure.

  • Applications: cylinders, valves, control blocks.

Automotive industry

  • Advantage: high chemical resistance and longevity.

  • Applications: seals for fuel systems, gearboxes and braking systems.

Mechanical engineering

  • Advantage: resistant to dynamic loads and abrasion.

  • Applications: rotating shafts, pumps, compressors.

Food and medical technology

  • Advantage: hygienic and resistant to high temperatures.

  • Applications: seals in sterile equipment, food packaging machines.

Quad rings offer numerous advantages but also involve some challenges:

  • Manufacturing costs: quad rings are more complex to manufacture and therefore more expensive than O-rings.

  • Installation: precision is required to ensure an optimum sealing effect.

  • Choice of material: choosing the right material is crucial to meet chemical and thermal requirements.

  • What is the difference between a quad ring and an O-ring? The cross-section of a quad ring has four lips, whereas an O-ring has a round cross-section. Quad rings offer a larger sealing surface and lower friction.

  • In which applications are quad rings better suited? Quad rings are ideal for applications with dynamic movement, high pressures or strict sealing requirements.

  • Can quad rings replace O-rings? Yes, in many cases quad rings can replace O-rings and offer improved performance.

  • How long do quad rings last? Service life depends on the material and operating conditions, but is often longer than that of O-rings.

Quad rings are an excellent alternative to O-rings and offer advantages such as a good sealing effect, lower friction and longer durability. They are ideal for demanding applications in hydraulics, pneumatics, the automotive industry and medical technology. Choosing the right material and installing them precisely are crucial to obtaining the full benefits of a quad ring.
